Οι αρχαίοι Έλληνες, το έλεγαν το «τσάι των Τιτάνων». Η Μαλοτήρα, ή καλοκοιμηθιά, είναι ένα από τα διασημοτερα είδη του σιδερίτη, πιο γνωστού σαν τσάι του βουνού και φυτρώνει στα κρητικά βουνά. Το όνομα Μαλοτήρα το οφείλει στους Ενετούς και προέρχεται από τις λέξεις “male” (αρρώστεια, κακό) και “tirare” (τραβάω), επειδή το θεωρούσαν πανάκεια. Καλλιεργείται βιολογικά στον Ομαλό, στην αρχή του ξακουστού φαραγγιού της Σαμαριάς.
